The Order of Rio Branco was bestowed upon Garo Keheyan, Honorary Consul of Brazil in Cyprus, on the 26th November, 2018, in recognition and appreciation of his efforts to strengthen the bonds of friendship between Brazil and Cyprus.
The ceremony, hosted by the Brazilian Ambassador João Inácio Oswald Padilha and his wife Maria Gertrudes Oswald, at the official residence in Nicosia, was attended by the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris, the permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs, Minas Hadjimichael, and the former minister of foreign affairs, Nicos Rolandis, as well as members of parliament, heads of diplomatic missions, senior government officials, representatives of the Cypriot business and cultural communities, friends of Garo Keheyan and members of his family.
The Order of Rio Branco (Ordem de Rio Branco) is an honorific order of Brazil instituted by decree in 1963. It is named in honour of the Brazilian diplomat José Paranhos, Baron of Rio Branco. The President of Brazil serves as the Grand Master of the Order while the Minister of Foreign Affairs is the order’s Chancellor.
