The New Year may be long gone for most of us but for the Chinese it’s just around the corner as they mark the changing of the year on February 5. The Cyprus-China Art, Culture and Education Center has three-days of celebrations lined up later in the month to welcome the Chinese Year of the Pig.
Welcoming the Year of the Pig “will bring traditional Chinese Spring festivities and rituals to the community of Cyprus,” says Meimei Han, director of the Educational Centre.
Vibrant and colourful festivities are set to take place with live multicultural performances on stage by a Chinese Acrobatic Troupe, a dance group performance by the Cyprus Overseas Chinese, a special Chinese New Year food show, a food culture photo exhibition and a New Year fireworks show. Familiar with the culture or not, the lively celebrations are set to entertain all tastes, ages and ethnic backgrounds.
“The Chinese New Year is the most important festive celebration of Chinese culture. It is celebrated all over the world by Chinese families and communities,” explains Meimei who together with the Chinese Friendship Association Cyprus, Strovolos Municipality, the International Exchange and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, the Chinese Cuisine Association and the Larnaca Municipality have put this year’s celebrations together.
The first event will be held on Sunday January 20 at the Strovolos Municipality square with a 30-stall bazaar covering most things China. Chinese cultural products and New Year festive items, souvenirs, culinary delights, fashion accessories for traditional Chinese clothing, festive decorations, calligraphy, Chinese painting and crafts and much more is promised.
Something to look forward to at the bazaar is a traditional Chinese tea ceremony in addition to the cultural performances.
January 22 will be more of a culinary journey as the food and culture photo exhibition Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage will take place alongside an acrobatic performance and a fireworks show. The following day the festivities travel to Larnaca.
“Our goal of organising this event is to increase awareness of the Chinese culture and developments in Cyprus,” says Meimei, “as well as to provide an opportunity for the community to enjoy the happiness of Chinese New Year.”
