Healed pelicans being released to the wild on Friday

The Game Fund will release two pelicans on Friday at the Akrotiri salt lake.

Before they are released at 11am they will be ringed at the Akrotiri environmental information centre.

The two pelicans were found in a weakened state at the beginning of November 2018 in the area of the Akrotiri airport and received the necessary care at the rehabilitation centre of the Game Fund.

They are now ready to be released in a suitable wetland near the place where they were found.

The Pelecanus onocrotalus, or great white pelican, is a bird in the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia and in Africa in swamps and shallow lakes and a small number of the birds travel via Cyprus.
