Mother faces charges of child abandonment after girl 10, found walking alone

A 26-year-old woman was taken in court on Tuesday for allegedly leaving her 10-year-old daughter wandering unsupervised in central Limassol.

She is facing charges of child abandonment.

The girl was found by a couple on Monday wandering alone along Franklin Roosevelt Avenue in Limassol. They took the 10-year-old to a police station.

The girl reportedly said her mother had picked her up from school that day and that both got into a bus to the Limassol marina area, where the mother got off. The 10-year-old said she remained on the bus and got off at another stop where she met with some of her friends and went together to a mall.

At some point, the girl left and started walking alone in the street until she was found by the couple.

The 26-year-old was arrested and taken in court where a case was filed against her for offences under the law on child welfare. The 10-year-old was placed under the care of the social welfare services.
