Music fills winter nights at Zaatar

As eventful as December was for Zaatar Food & Arts, the rest of January and February will be as action packed with weekly events already planned until the end of the February. There is something for all tastes but which are the events that really stand out?

Among oriental dances and music nights, Zaatar welcomes the Mousa (muse) ensemble to wheel in February. Established by Michalis Tterlikkas in 1985, the ensemble is set to take the audience on a journey to the east, with traditional sounds composed by Michalis Ttertlikkas, Costas Karpasitis, Yiannis Souroulas and Nikos Souroulas. Of the unusual musical instruments to expect are the lute and the tamboutsia, described as the most authentic percussion organ of Cyprus.

Later on in the month, on Valentine’s Day, comes the Funked Up Project, The Piano Edition. The rock and blues band will be hosted again at Zaatar “for a beautiful night of Rock, Jazz, Blues and Funk songs and special additions to honour the power of love.” So, if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day event with a soft rock touch, Pavlos Gregoras, Christos Pechlivanis and Nickolas Filippou promise to entertain.

In between the musical and dance events visitors can also enjoy an exhibition that has quietly been going on in the background on the walls of Zaatar. All throughout January and February, Elias Zaarour’s art project will be displayed. Figures are his dominant subject, using them to understand his surroundings with drawings and paintings reflecting the dualism of time and space, reality and illusion.

A visual search of form, light and colours and the examination of contemporary daily language is expressively present in his images. Elias’ work has been showcased in Cyprus and abroad for exhibitions in galleries and institutions as well as part of mural projects. And if you see an art piece you like, contact Zaatar for the pricelist.

There are about a dozen other events happening at this cultural and entertainment space. To discover them, visit their Facebook page:
