An elderly man, Giorgos Mavrommatis, 76, was found charred in his Larnaca home on Sunday morning after a fire in his bedroom.

Mavrommatis, who was living alone, was found dead at around 7am by firemen who had gone to his house to put out the blaze after being alerted by neighbours that fire had erupted in the pensioner’s home.

It is believed that Mavrommatis had tried to put out the fire but lost his balance and fell on the floor.

Firemen found in his bedroom a camping gas stove which exploded from the fire, causing a second  blaze in another area of the room.

The 76-year-old was transferred to the Larnaca general hospital where his death was confirmed.
