Smack bang in the centre of the tourist area with an enviable view of the sea is the quaint Happy Jack’s Pub, which first opened 30 years ago and is a little treasure!
Open 9am-3am EVERY day of the year (yes, even Christmas and Easter!), this cosy little watering hole enjoys a steady stream of locals and repeat customers each morning who greet the cheery Scottish owner by name before taking their ‘usual’ seats in the wide, white, wicker chairs at glass-topped tables. They are here for the infamous English breakfast (or Scottish breakfast, if potato scones and black pudding are more your scene) and it’s no wonder! Served from 9am-1pm daily, and costing just €3.95 it’s an absolute steal: eggs, bacon, pork sausage, hash brown, grilled tomato, baked beans, toast, butter and jam. I’m a sucker for a hearty breakfast so today was no different and it was hot and delicious.
Transported back in time with hits from the 80s and 90s playing softly in the background, I couldn’t help but notice the cute little book exchange in the corner, the pool table tucked away across the other side of the room and about a dozen large flat screen TVs.
The pub is deceptive, with two distinct sections: a main bar servicing the front section where food is served and a more homely pub-style back area complete with heavy wooden tables, tall bar stools, and pretty leadlight lampshades. To one side is an in-house bookie – CYBet so it’s no revelation that all the major local and international football matches are shown here too.
The expansive menu which includes Pukka pies, an impressive grilled section, seafood, pasta, salads and more – at extremely reasonable prices – is served every night till midnight when the bar really comes alive. Karaoke in English and Greek is on every Friday and Saturday night (which proves to be quite a hoot!) and in Russian on Wednesdays. Patrons are an unorthodox combination of foreigners and locals all with the same goal in mind: to have a great night out and with nothing too much trouble for the staff and their welcoming approach, this is guaranteed!
Having searched (obviously not hard enough) for a place to go for cocktails on a Monday night (my only regular kid-free night), rave reviews online on Facebook and Tripadvisor only confirm what I’ve just discovered, that it’s an ideal spot to pop into… every day or night of the week!
Oh, did I mention there’s free wifi too?
