Police seek three people after crime gang arrest (updated)

Three people are being sought in Larnaca following the arrest of 42-year-old man believed to be involved with a criminal gang.

According to the police, on Friday a 55-year-old internet café owner and a 53-year-old café owner in Pyla reported to police that on the previous evening ten to 12 people had come to their outlets demanding to be paid €100 a night for protection.

When the two men refused to pay, they told police the men threatened to cause damages to their cafes and to themselves personally.

Police inquiries have revealed witness evidence against four people aged 32, 41 and 42.

On the basis of this police received a search warrant for the house of the 42-year-old in Larnaca and on Saturday lunchtime arrested him, taking him to the police station for questioning. He was remanded for eight days on Sunday by Larnaca District Court.

Charges being investigated by police include conspiracy to commit felony and misdemeanour, involvement in a criminal organisation, extortion, threat of violence and unlawful possession of a Category B firearm.
