A man was arrested on Monday evening after a large quantity of cigarettes and tobacco for which no tax had been paid were found in his possession.

Officers stopped a car driven by a 52-year-old man at 8.15pm for a routine check on a road in Limassol.

They found the amount of €3,200, 14 kilos of tobacco and 955 packs of cigarettes in the car.

The goods did not bear warnings in Greek and Turkish as to the risks of smoking, customs said, an indication that no duty was paid.

The driver was arrested and his car and the tobacco products were seized by the customs department.
