In its first year of operation, the American Breast Centre in Nicosia conducted 405 biopsies, which turned up 165 new cases of cancer, it said on Wednesday.
Marking one year of operation, the medical facility, which is part of the American Medical Centre, said it had also carried out 57 mastectomies, Dr Charalambos Charalambous, the centre’s chief surgeon said.
Specialist radiologist at the centre, Dr Demitris Sophocleous, underlined that the American Breast Centre was staffed by medics and scientists with many years of experience in modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods in breast disorders. Plus, the latest technologies were utilised in mammography, clinical examination and breast ultrasounds.
“If necessary, a biopsy on a finding can be carried out directly, either with the guidance of the mammograph, or with the guidance of the ultrasound,” he said.
“In case of malignant damage, it may be localised with markers, if necessary, before oncological treatment or surgery.”
The centre is a full member of the Breast Centres Network of the International Clinic Network that specialises exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
The centres on the network are recommended by bodies such as EUSoma, Europa Donna and the European Parliament.
