As the weather gradually warms up, we can expect outdoor sporting events to reach a peak before the summer heat wave.
And while most marathons held in Cyprus take place in the cities or along coastal roads one coming up is in a rather different location. Mitsero is not a popular destination, though it is an area steeped in history important to the island. It holds many of Cyprus’ mines.
Joining the running craze is the Mitsero Mine Run 2019, inviting people to explore the suburb of Nicosia. This cross-country race first took place in 2018 after runner Costas Patinios was inspired to create it to promote the historical village and the beautiful scenery of the wider area.
The run is organised by SAS Sports Events Management in collaboration with the Mitsero Community Council and Mistero Youth Council. This Sunday, February 10, runners of all levels can join the run as the route is on easy forest roads.
There will be a 21k run, a 12k run, a 5.5k run and a participatory Kids run. The route that has been chosen highlights the long history of Mitsero village and rewards the runner with unparalleled beauty images, smells and colours.
For everyone’s wellbeing, the organisers say that every 2.5 to 3km there will be energiser stations with water and throughout the whole route there are signs. Starting and finishing from the village square, the Mitsero Mine Run 2019 sounds like an alternative race running through Cyprus’ history and nature.
