Cypriot social media went into overdrive on Wednesday evening after a report saying ruling Disy would be fielding popular singer Anna Vissi in the upcoming European Parliament elections.
Though not officially confirmed by the party, netizens took to their keyboards and mobile phones to express their views on the news.
Party leader Averof Neophytou would neither confirm nor deny the report by daily newspaper Politis.
“For weeks now, various people have been writing things about Disy’s ticket. We thought it would be best to avoid confirmations or denials,” Neophytou said, pointing out that everything would probably become clear on Friday if the number of candidates does not exceed the available positions.
The rumours were quelled in the afternoon after several outlets run reports that Vissi will not be running though no official sources were cited.
Disy hopefuls will be submitting their candidacies on Friday and if there are over six an election will be held within the party.
So far two members have officially submitted their candidacy, sitting MEP Lefteris Christophorou and MP Elena Stavrou.
MP Nicos Tornaritis is also expected to run while reports suggested former news presenter and current House spokesman Loukas Fourlas could also be running.
