Man remanded for arranging sham wedding (updated)

A man was remanded for three days on Monday in connection with a sham marriage following his arrest in Nicosia on Sunday evening.

The 37-year-old man was allegedly involved in arranging the wedding of a 19-year-old woman with an EU passport and a 21-year-old third country national, which took place on June 15 last year in the Larnaca district.

The young woman told police about the sham marriage and the 21-year-old man was arrested last week.

She said last May she was contacted by a Nicosian man whom she had known for three or four years. The man, who was aware she had financial difficulties, offered her €1,300 to €1,500 if she went through with the wedding.

He reportedly told her she could get a divorce after four months, and while she was married she would receive €200 per month.
