Cypriot and Russian FMs to meet in Moscow

Christodoulides and Lavrov will meet this Friday in Moscow

The Cyprus problem, bilateral relations between Cyprus and Russia, relations between the EU and Moscow as well as developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region will be the focus of the talks which the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulides, will have on February 22nd with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow.

Christodoulides told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that during their talks the two ministers will have the opportunity to review the two countries’ bilateral relations covering a broad spectrum of issues and exchange views on them.

Moreover, he noted that they will discuss the EU-Russia relations, their current state of affairs, the prospects as well as the challenges regarding this issue, and how they must be addressed.

The Foreign Minister also said that they will discuss the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and more specifically about the challenges in the region and how the situation is developing.

He went on to say that the Cyprus problem and efforts for the resumption of substantive talks aiming to solve it, as well as the issue of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will also be on the agenda of their meeting.

Christodoulides and Lavrov will first have a tete-a-tete meeting scheduled to begin at 11 am local time. Their private meeting will be followed by expanded talks between delegations of the two sides, headed by the two ministers.

After the talks, Christodoulides and Lavrov will make statements to the press, to be followed by a working lunch.
