Professional and independent theatre companies put on productions all year around. But at certain times of the year, school shows give them a run for their money both in terms of the quality of the production and the enthusiasm with which it is staged.
Coming up is a performance by the Heritage Private School, which is about to present its latest musical, As You Wish, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The production is adapted from the novel and major motion picture The Princess Bride, to which the school has added its own touch as it features original music and lyrics written by the school’s drama teacher Alexandra Kouris and music teacher Hovig Nassanian, promising to deliver high-spirited adventure on its inaugural run.
The film The Princess Bride, from which the school musical takes inspiration, was written by William Goldman, first as a fantasy novel in 1973, and later as a well-known film, directed by Rob Reiner in 1987, starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes. Thirty-two years later, Kouris and Nassanian have turned it into a musical, which will now be brought to the stage for the first time.
As You Wish will feature a 45-member student cast and crew, as well as a live band, which promises to bring to life a brand new innovative production. Full of all the eccentric characters, dazzling swordplay and romance of the original, this production aims to amaze and entertain a wide international and family audience through the added dimension of song.
“Creating our own musical,” says the musical’s director Kouris, “has infused a magic and energy that is felt by the cast and crew, and which will definitely be felt by the audience. We all can’t wait to show you our talents!”
The production recounts the love story of Buttercup and Westley and the daringly comic escapades that can ensue when true love is set against inconceivable odds. A grandmother visits her grandson and opens his mind to a world of imagination and fantasy, recounting the many obstacles the couple must face to be united: a dastardly kidnapping, a nefarious Prince, rodents of unusual size, and even death itself.
Tickets are priced at €12 for adults and €6 for children, and are available for purchase from the School’s offices. Alternatively, you could also get tickets at the door before the performances.
Suitable for all, young children, families and musical-enthusiasts, the performance last two hours with a twenty-minute intermission.
