The worlds of sculpture and drawing meet in Alexandros Grant Michaelides’ latest exhibition, starting next week. Opening on February 26 at Gloria Gallery in Nicosia, the artist will present his newest pieces which seek to draw the viewer in, making them a participant along with the artist in his creative process.
Through his sculptural reliefs and drawings, Alexandros aims to highlight the importance of academic measurement in his work, thereby providing the viewer with some insight into the mind of the artist. The beauty of constructional lines, which are used for the creation of still life in three dimensions, is celebrated in his work.
Through the many structures of his sculptures – such as horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines used to create spatial reference points – he visually explains the process of creating an observational work like a still life. These somewhat minimal still-life compositions are the reference points which become the basis of the artist’s work in this series.
This sculpture and drawing exhibition isn’t the first for Alexandros. In fact, he has held many solo exhibitions in Cyprus in the past, and has been part of group exhibitions in Cyprus, the UK and Finland.
After studying Fine Arts at two universities, Camberwell College of Arts and then Middlesex University, he went on to specialise in oil painting. His academic journey continued into teaching and today, as well as being an artist, Alexandros also teaches art, thereby spreading his passion.
