Boy 16 charged with host of traffic offences

A sixteen-year-old from Ayia Napa was arrested late Saturday after being caught speeding and driving through a red light in the town.

According to police, shortly after 9pm an officer on patrol saw the teen break a red light on a main road.

He signalled the driver to stop but instead, the boy sped up to get away. He was intercepted shortly afterwards by other officers.

After being stopped, police discovered his age and that he was driving without a licence or insurance, and he was taken into custody. He tested negative for drink driving.

The boy’s father was called to the station and confirmed the vehicle was his but said he had not given his son permission to use the car.

The boy was charged with speeding, reckless driving, driving without a licence or insurance, breaking a red light and failing to stop for police.

He was released around 11pm and will appear in court at a later date.
