Urgent appeal for blood donations

Blood banks are in urgent need of donations of all blood types, the health ministry announced on Sunday.

Due to the increased demand for transfusions since January 1, stocks at blood banks are extremely low, the ministry said, noting that over 12,000 blood derivatives were transfused since the beginning of the year – a number largely over the average.

Increased flu and gastroenteritis incidents have also led to the exclusion of a large number of blood donors from donating, the ministry added.

In view of the urgent need, the ministry announced that donation stations island-wide will be extending their working hours between Monday and Wednesday.
