Celebrating the tradition of Smelly Thursday

For Greek-Cypriot culture, Thursday equates to lots of meat-eating as the day launches the beginning of the carnival in Cyprus, eleven days before Green Monday when the real fasting starts. Whether you follow the tradition or not, your senses are bound to catch the smell of the sizzling sausages and the smoke coming from every corner.

The long-standing tradition of Smelly Thursday (Tsiknopempti) is of course not restricted to Cyprus, nor is it the only local tradition. Celebrating the varied traditions of cultures living in Cyprus, Home for Cooperation and the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) are launching a new series of events Celebrating Traditions.

The first will be held this Thursday in true Tsiknopempti style with a chicken and pork souvla barbecue or a jacket potato with mushroom and halloumi for those who don’t want to go all out on the meat. The traditional feast will be accompanied by some live music and a special “Drink for Peace” beer.

At least three more events in this format celebrating traditions from various cultures are lined up and AHDR and Home for Cooperation hope the project continues after that.

“This series of events follows this principle: to promote diversity, understanding and respect and ultimately a culture of peace, as opposed to segregation and discrimination. Starting from this point, we want to portray once again, how diverse Cyprus really is, to learn about different cultures that we share on this island and celebrate these in a multicultural, respectful and of course festive manner,” organisers say.

Those who want to celebrate their tradition and contribute to the project can get in touch via [email protected]

For Thursday’s event everyone is encouraged to dress up and keep the carnival spirit alive!
