Hospital fined €5,000 for loss of patient file

The Makarios children's hospital in Nicosia

A fine of €5,000 was imposed on the Makarios Children’s Hospital in Nicosia for the loss of a patient’s file, according to a decision of the Privacy Commissioner published on her website.

A patient lodged a complaint with the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection that the request for access to his medical file was not met by the hospital because the dossier could not be found.

After investigating the case and announcing the prima facie violation of regulations, an administrative fine of €5,000 was imposed for loss of patient’s file.

Account was taken of the fact that following the complaint, measures were taken by the hospital to improve data protection for patients’ medical records.
