Police search for drug suspect who escaped capture

Police are searching for a 31-year-old man in the Famagusta area, suspected of possessing rifles and two kilograms of cannabis, authorities said on Wednesday.

Police said that on Tuesday afternoon they received a tip about someone possessing an illegal substance and went to search the 31-year-old’s home.

The man attempted to flee when he realised police were coming.  In his attempt to escape the scene, he hit three police cars.

Police followed his car, which the man eventually abandoned in an area within the Dhekelia base area and escaped capture.

During investigations on his home, police found a hunting rifle and two air rifles, which were seized as evidence.

On Wednesday, Cyprus police and bases’ police followed the man’s trail, and found his car in a field in the base area.  With the help of a canine unit, the police discovered that the man had two containers outside the vehicle, which contained approximately two kg of cannabis.

Police believe the man threw the containers out of the car, before fleeing.

Bases’ police seized the containers, as they were found in their area.

Police are continuing their investigations.
