The epic Bolshoi Ballet is set to continue its cinema series with screenings of La Bayadere this Sunday at K-Cineplex cinemas in all four main cities of the island. This production of the 1877 tale seen as one of the greatest works in classical ballet history is enriched by Yuri Grigorovich’s choreography and Léon Minkus’ music.
Its dazzling sets, infinite white tutus and costumes also promise a captivating show yet what is bound to steal the show is the Kingdom of the Shades scene, one of the most iconic scenes in ballet.
La Bayadere follows temple dancer Nikiya and warrior Solor who fall deeply in love, giving way to heated passions, and murderous intrigues when the Rajah and his daughter Gamzatti discover their forbidden love. It is a story of love, death and vengeful judgement set in India. The choreography, set design and music illuminate the tragic tale of Nikiya’s doomed love for Solor and their ultimate redemption.
