Bomb hoax at Senior School in Nicosia (Updated)

A private school in Nicosia was evacuated on Friday after what appears to be a bomb hoax.

The call at the Senior School in Latsia was placed at 8.20am. Teachers immediately evacuated the premises and notified the police who cordoned off the area.

The bomb squad searched the scene with a sniffer dog but no signs of an explosive device were found.

School headmistress Deborah Duncan said pupils were immediately asked to assemble at the sports ground awaiting the arrival of the police.

Parents were also notified of the incident via text message and there was no cause for concern.

Following the police search, pupils returned to the classrooms.

“Everything weren’t well; we take our pupils’ health and safety very seriously,” Duncan said.

School authorities were working with police to find out where the call came from. A similar incident had taken place around five years ago.

The head of the parents’ association, Giorgos Hadjisavva, who was at the school at the time, said the evacuation was carried out in just a few minutes.
