Drunk driver arrested after hit and run on highway

LARNACA police detained a 25-year-old man on Sunday in connection with abandoning the scene of a traffic collision and drink driving.

The man was arrested after a 59-year-old reported to police at around 11.40pm that while driving on the motorway near the Rizoelia roundabout, a car crashed into his right side and abandoned the scene.

No one was injured in the incident.

Traffic police located the second vehicle shortly afterwards in the Ayios Tychonas area and determined that its 25-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol.

A preliminary breathalyser test registered 81 microgrammes of alcohol, nine times over the legal limit of 9μg for people with a beginner’s licence. The final test showed 73μg.

Earlier in the day in Paphos, police intercepted a cyclist who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Officers on motorcycle patrol stopped the 53-year-old man at around 2.35am on Ikaros Street.

The Paphos resident underwent a breathalyser, which clocked him at 81μg, way over the legal limit of 22μg.

He was later charged and released to appear in court at a later date.
