Man on remand after arrest for extortion (updated)

A 39-year-old man arrested in connection with usury and extortion was on Tuesday remanded in custody for two days.

The man was arrested on Monday following a complaint filed by a 53-year-old woman from Limassol.

The woman told police she had borrowed €2,000 from the suspect in 2014 on condition that she would return the money in one month.

The woman did not return the money within a month and the amount gradually skyrocketed amid threats to €92,000 in August last year.

The woman said she cut a cheque for the amount due but when the man tried to cash it he was told there were not enough funds prompting him to file a lawsuit. At this point the woman reported the case to the police.
