Regular stand-up comedy nights that got underway in Paphos just over two years ago are gaining in popularity across the island with two further gigs to take place this week. Hosted by organiser and performer Andi Hobbs, two well-known comics from the UK, Smug Roberts and Phil Reid, will take to the stage at two different venues in Cyprus, straight after warm up amateurs, Cyprus residents Max Sands and 17-year-old Jordan Walters.
“We are so looking forward to having such great and established comics entertaining the audiences, and also getting local residents involved with the amateur slot. It’s important to me to give them a stage to show what they can do and get some experience,” Hobbs told the Cyprus Mail.
Smug Roberts is a successful TV comic who has appeared in numerous Peter Kay shows and also played the barman in Mrs Browns Boys, said Hobbs adding that Roberts was most recently seen on the British TV show Coronation Street.
Phil Reid is a stand-up comic and also an accomplished ventriloquist. He uses several different masks which he brings out to place on unsuspecting members of the audience, creating much hilarity.
The two upcoming LOL Comedy Cyprus events will be held at Nands Bar in Episkopi, Limassol on Thursday and Sapphire Bar in Paphos on Friday. They are both set to become regular comedy venues. There are a limited number of tickets still available for each venue.
Hobbs is well-known in Cyprus as half of the tribute act the Blues Brothers, along with AJ Vickers and said that later in the year he would like to stage an amateur night with around seven comics from Cyprus giving them a platform to hone their skills. He also plans to offer comedy coaching with a professional, he said.
The singer decided to set up a stand-up circuit after audience members approached him after his Blues Brothers performances, complimenting his act and wishing there was more stand-up and comedy available on the island.
Around 95 per cent of the LOL Comedy Cyprus audience members are resident expats with the reminder visitors to the island. Hobbs said that he hopes to attract more tourists to shows in the summer months.
He added that LOL Comedy Cyprus has already established a loyal following with regular audience members bringing more and more people to each show. “I am really overwhelmed by the response from the public so far, we sold out every event we did last year, and it seems we have started a trend in Cyprus as more comedy nights are springing up over the island, and that is exactly what I had hoped for.”
