Employment in the public sector rose in the 4th quarter of 2018, according to figures released by the statistical service on Thursday.
The number of employees in the public sector in the last quarter of the previous year rose to 68,351 of which 62,414 served in the general government, and 5,937 in state-owned companies.
In the general government, which consists of the government, non-profit organisations and local authorities, the number of staff was 51,915, 6,307 and 4,192 respectively.
Employment in the broad public sector increased by 1.085 persons or 1.61 per cent compared with the same quarter of 2017.
Employment in the central government rose by 1,044, or 1.83per cent, and by 65 persons, 1.11 per cent, in publicly-owned companies. Ae a decrease of 24 persons was seen in local administration.
Compared with the 3rd quarter of 2018, employment in the broad public sector rose by 1,527 persons, or 2.29 per cent.
Employment in the central government increased by 1,577 persons or 2.78 per cent, and by 16, 0.27 per cent, in publicly-owned companies.
It dropped by 66 persons in local administration.
