Annual islandwide clean up to take place in April

For the seventh time, the environment commissioner and the volunteer network Together Cyprus are organising the cleanup campaign Let’s Do It! Cyprus – Clean up Cyprus, which will take place from April 2 to 7, with the main event taking place on Sunday April 7.

The goal of the organisers is to “involve and inform as many volunteers as possible so that our message can reach all of Cyprus and be heard loudly throughout the world,” a press release said.

Cyprus intends to remove as much rubbish as possible from the countryside in one day as part of the global campaign Let’s Do It World, which apart from collecting waste aims at raising public awareness on issues related to the protection, conservation and sustainable management of land and water.

The campaign, which started in Estonia in 2008, is the largest volunteer programme organised worldwide, and Cyprus has been part of it since 2012.

In April 2018, more than 46,000 volunteers participated in the campaign, making Cyprus one of six countries out of 120 taking part where more than 5 per cent of the population participated.

During the April 29 event volunteers were divided into more than 500 teams which collected a total of 4,456 bags of mixed garbage weighing 31,194 kilos and 2,661 bags of PMD recyclable waste weighing 18,627 kilos.

This year the big clean up event will start on April 7 at 10am in the Athalassa park in Nicosia.
