Nicosia municipality said on Wednesday it had acquired the old animal-feed production factory in the Sopaz area of the capital and it would be used to develop that region of the city.
The landmark old building along the buffer zone was bought for €2.1m, the municipality said, adding that it had secured a loan for the purchase.
The final use of the building and the surrounding area will be discussed by the city council and will be based initially on the ‘Project for the Sopaz Area’ that is currently being drafted.
“We want it to be noted that its future use will have multiple benefits across the region, a region touching the Green Line,” the municipality said.
“We would prefer to use Sopaz either for academic purposes or for research projects or in general in a way that helps to develop the region in a more rational way, taking into account that in recent years there has been rapid residential development in the area.”
The municipality added that the building was a landmark in the areas of Kaimakli, Pallouriotissa and Aglandjia “and with its redevelopment, the municipality aims to further develop these areas near the Green Line”.
