sCYence Fair: opening the eyes of young scientists

With the participation of hundreds of students from 25 public and private schools of Cyprus, the pioneering and multidimensional science festival ‘sCYence Fair 2019’, organised for the first time by the Cyprus Institute, was successfully held on March 15 and 16.

The aim of the science festival, under the auspices of the education ministry and supported by the municipality of Aglantzia, was to attract the attention of people of all ages to science, technology and innovation, inspire and encourage young people to expand their scientific pursuing and envisioning a career in the fields of science.

‘SCYence Fair 2019’ included a variety of innovative and entertaining events such as scientific and educational interactive events, exhibitions, presentations and informative lectures, experiments and workshops as well as speeches by renowned scientists from the Cyprus Institute and abroad. At the same time, the Cyprus Institute opened its doors, enabling small researchers and the general public to explore the impressive scientific workshops and facilities.

During the festival, students presented innovative activities and scientific research projects, while the best and most imaginative activities and presentations from primary and secondary schools were awarded based on the scientific approach and the overall presentation. Winners of the three categories were the elementary school of Dhali III with the project ‘Hydraulic Robotic Hand’, the Limassol Catholic gymnasium with ‘Stars: Birth-Life-Death’ and the lyceum of Ayios Ioannis Limassol, with the ‘Study of water in areas of Troodos’. The awards were handed out by the head of the Cyprus Institute Costas Papanikolas, Petros Kareklas, head of the Association of Friends of the Institute of Cyprus and Michalis Giagou, vice president of the Institute of Cyprus.
