Major malfunction causes widespread power cuts (updated)

The Vasilikos power station

A major malfunction at the island’s main power station at Vassilikos caused cuts in various areas on Tuesday, the electricity authority said.

EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou said the power station lost over half its production at around 9.50am — from 580MW it dropped to 340MW, causing outages all over Cyprus.

A preliminary investigation showed that the problem had been caused by a lightning strike.

By 10.10am the company had put its backup generators in operation, gradually restoring power.
