The Director General of the Agency, George Campanellas, met with investors and company representatives on the side-lines of the event
The Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (Invest Cyprus) took part in the Annual Investment Meeting (AIM), the leading gathering of the international investment community, held in Dubai between 8-10 April 2019, as part of its mission to promote Cyprus as an attractive investment destination and business hub.
The Annual Investment Meeting is considered to be the world’s leading investment promotion conference, showcasing the latest developments, information and strategies to attract Foreign Direct Investment. Overall, the conference attracted 20.000 participants from 143 countries and 460 exhibitors, as well as more than 1000 FDI specialists. Among others, corporate leaders, policy makers, businessmen, investors, leading academics and experts attended the event, with a view to enhance the network of their businesses or countries and build sustainable partnerships with investors.
The theme of the conference this year, which was held at the initiative of the UAE Ministry of Economy and under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, was ‘Mapping the Future of FDI: Enriching World Economies through Digital Globalization’.
In the context of the conference, the Director General of Invest Cyprus, George Campanellas, participated in a panel discussion on how the technological revolution affects the investment climate in the host countries for FDI Projects.
Mr. Campanellas also participated in a pre-conference workshop, in collaboration with the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA), under the theme “Trends in Investment Promotion and their impact”. The presentations focused on the fact that with the ongoing technological developments and the slowdown of foreign direct investment, Investment Promotion Agencies need to adapt in order remain competitive and to be able to fulfil their mission. The CEO of WAIPA, Bostjan Skalar and the Managing Director of the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency Jorge Sequiera, also participated in the workshop.
Moreover, on the side-lines of the Annual Investment Meeting, Mr. Campanellas met with investors and companies representing family offices, which participated in the conference.
Mr. Campanellas explained how the development of new technologies and particularly artificial intelligence, Blockchain technology, and cybersecurity developments, significantly affect the traditional sectors of the Cypriot economy, such as tourism and shipping. These developments have led Invest Cyprus to redesign its strategy and place ICT among its top priorities.
