Play that accordion

Concerts, seminars, workshops and a unique accordion exhibition will all be part of the second Accordion Festival that’s coming up on May 3 to 5. Yet another festival being hosted in one of the island’s many villages, this one will take place at Pera Orinis, just outside Nicosia. Aimed at all music lovers, accordion fans, performers and musicians, both professional and amateur, the festival aims to create awareness and educate people about this instrument.

Through the various seminars and concerts being organised, attendees and participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the instrument – and, of course, to listen to accordion music by some of the very best in the field.

Friday 3 will start with the exhibition, then, in the afternoon, a series of workshops will follow. Duos and bands will take charge of the night’s entertainment, though what sounds even more exciting is the 9.15pm-10.30pm slot which invites people to get up and perform.

The following day will continue with workshops, including a theatrical seminar and a children’s workshop on creating musical instruments from recycled materials. Choirs and bands will perform live from 7.45 onwards.

An introduction to Balkan music and a tango workshop will form part of the final day’s activities. Another three seminars will take place before all the festival’s participants (which adds up to a lot of accordions!) are invited to a group performance in the village streets. Festivities will end with a performance by the Children’s and Adults’ Community Choirs along with Mandolinata.

For those who want to stay at Pera Orinis throughout the festival, there will be a free camping area with toilets and shower facilities. If that’s not your style, you can stay at Guesthouse Gonia or Aperanti Agrotourism, which is offering special rates including breakfast for the weekend.
