An abandoned hotel in Platres was badly damaged by a fire early on Thursday morning.

The fire services were informed about the fire at the Pavsilipon hotel at 3.14am and responded by fighting the blaze with eight fire trucks, six from fire stations in Limassol, Pelendri, Moniatis and Agros, one from the British bases and one belonging to the forestry department.

According to an announcement by the services, the immediate and coordinated action prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses.

The blaze was under control by 5.45am but the roof and some walls collapsed.

The causes of the fire are not yet known.
