Prestigious European award for UCy sustainable energy project

Photovoltaic cells at the University of Cyprus

The Foss Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus has won the European Life Citizens’ Prize for its SmartPV project.
The project was shortlisted for the above award together with another eight other projects and won the first place following public voting.
Life+ SmartPV connected around 300 photovoltaic system owners in Cyprus to a decentralised power network. The project used smart meters, remote monitoring and dynamic tariffs to provide incentives for changes in consumption profiles. The results of this project will be used to revise the country’s energy policy to favour renewables and energy efficiency, in line with EU targets.
The Life awards ceremony was held within the 2019 EU Green Week, Europe’s biggest environmental event, on Thursday, May 16 in Brussels.
The coordinator of the SmartPV project (University of Cyprus) and the partners, would like to thank all the citizens participating in the pilot project activity and assure them that together we can work towards the development of better energy policies and practices on our island.
We are more than grateful to all EU citizens for your votes & support.
