Yellow alert as temperature to hit 40C

The met office has issued a yellow weather alert for Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach 40C inland. Increased dust will also be in the atmosphere until Friday.

The alert is effective from 2pm until 4.30pm, when temperatures peak.

It will be hottest in Nicosia, while in other areas the top temperatures are 32C to 34C.

Mainly sunny weather with some high cloud has been forecast for the day by the met office.

At night, temperatures will fall to around 22 degrees Celsius.

Friday will be fine with just some clouds. It will be a little cooler inland and at the coast but not in the mountains, where temperatures will remain the same, around 5C warmer than is usual for this time of the year.

During the weekend, temperatures will fall some more but will still remain above average on Saturday. On Sunday, they will be closer to what is normal for late May.
