Woman found dead in field, suffocates from fire smoke (Update 2)

SIXTY-SEVEN-year-old Eleni Alexandrou died in a fire on Saturday morning while trying to burn wild vegetation near her son’s house in Tseri, near Nicosia.

Alexandrou’s body was found on Saturday by fire fighters who responded to a call about a fire in a field in the Tseri area at around 9 am. The fire was put out by the fire service around an hour and a half later.

The body was identified as belonging to the 67-year-old woman. It is believed the fire got out of control and Alexandrou suffocated from the smoke and died.

State broadcaster CyBC reported that Alexandrou was making preparations for her other son’s memorial on Sunday, who had died in 2009 in a motorcycle accident.

A state pathologist examined the scene, while a post mortem is expected to shed light on the exact cause of her death.
