Woman dies after car plunges into ravine

A 72-year-old woman was killed and a second one, 70, was in critical condition after the car they were travelling in fell into a ravine on the Kalopanayiotis to Gerakes road on Wednesday at around 3.40pm.

Anna Kalivitou was pronounced dead on arrival at Nicosia general hospital where she was airlifted by helicopter with her sister Aliki, who is said to be in critical condition.

It took rescue crews two hours to free the women from the mangled remains of their vehicle in the 100-metre ravine.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
