Omonia and Pafos FC get off to winning start

Action from the goalless draw in Limassol between AEL and Anorthosis

Omonia and Pafos FC got off to winning starts against Doxa Katokopias and Nea Salamina while AEL and Anorthosis drew blanks in their game on the opening day of the new season.

Matt Derbyshire got both of Omonia’s goals in their 2-0 win over Doxa with their new coach Henning Berg appearing satisfied with his team’s performance.

‘The heat, the many new faces, a different style in play did not make our job easy, but under the circumstances I am very happy with my team’ Berg said after the game.

In the big game of the opening day AEL and Anorthosis played out a goalless draw with AEL the better team in the opening forty five minutes and Anorthosis clearly the better side in the second half.

However the football at the Tsireion stadium was overshadowed by a comment made by Anorthosis’ coach Timur Getsbaya after the game asking ‘is the Tsireion stadium protected by UNESCO and there have been no improvements in 30 years?’

The Tsireion was one of the five stadiums that was granted a licenece to operate one day before the opening game of the season.

On Friday Pafos FC overcame Nea Salamina by 2-1 with Adam Nemec getting the winning in added time
