The Nicosia to Larnaca motorway near the Lymbia bridge closed on Sunday for a few hours due to car fire that spread also into the adjacent forest area.

The motorway closed between around 1 pm and 3 pm with traffic channelled to the old Nicosia to Larnaca road through the Pera Horio Nisou exit.

A motorist who witnesses the scene told the Cyprus Mail the car just burst into flames as it was moving on the motorway. Police said there were no injuries.

Another motorist said they were stuck on the motorway for around 40 minutes.

The blaze also spread to grass by the roadside and from there to wild vegetation, olive and pine trees. The fire burned in total 2,000 square metres of land near the motorway in the Lymbia area. The blaze was put out by crews of the forestry department and the fire service.

Crews will remain in the area to tackle possible rekindling of the fire.
