The annual open-air film screenings at Constantia Theatre bring Nicosians closer to independent cinema. For all those staying in the city throughout the summer, Constantia’s international and European cinema selections provide an entertaining night out.
If you have lived in the capital for a few years, chances are that you’ve found yourself at the Constantia open-air theatre once or twice, or possibly even more. The summer film marathon has become something of a tradition. The programme with the films to be screened is published online with showings every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are purchased at the door, the Theatro Ena box office or tickethour.com.cy and viewers are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes early to pick a seat and grab a snack and a cold beer if wanted.
This year, for its 22nd edition, the summer marathon at Constantia is dedicated to its founder, former minister of education Ouranios Ioannides who passed away this year. From July 22 until September 13, 40 screenings will take place on the same days as usual, yet they’ll be slightly adapted to the latest coronavirus measures.
This year, to avoid crowded lines and a packed theatre, Constantia will implement new regulations and from the 270 available seats only around 100-120 spots will be available for each screening.
A spacious open-air cinema screening local, European and international independent films sounds like an ideal place to be this summer, blending entertainment with the social distancing we are all still encouraged to follow.
Two Cypriot films will be included this year, the popular and awarded Smuggling Hendrix and Soteris Christou’s film Small White Envelopes. Arabic, Serbian and Slovakian films were included in last year’s programme and more international entries can be seen this summer as well. Whether local or foreign, Constantia’s summer screening marathon surely amplifies those quiet nights in the city.
