Man arrested in connection with drugs and assaulting police

A 24-year-old has been arrested by Larnaca police in connection with an investigation into stabbing offences, unlawful possession and illegal supply of controlled substance, and injuring a police officer.

During a stop-and-search in Larnaca, officers, one of whom was a woman, approached the man who was on foot and searched his bag, in which they said they found a 9cm blade, which they are investigating in connection with recent stabbing cases.

As the female officer continued to search his belongings, police said she was assaulted by the suspect who injured her in the face and threw her to the ground. He was immobilised by other officers as he tried to run.

Also in his bag, police said they found a metal crusher with small traces of what they believed to be cannabis – around 30-grammes worth.

The woman officer was treated at the A&E at Larnaca hospital for swelling of the cheekbones, upper lip and lower jaw, and bruising of the right forearm. She was treated and discharged.
