Arrest after car chase in centre of Limassol

Limassol police on Monday arrested a 57-year-old man after a car chase in the centre of town which ended when the suspect’s car was immobilised after colliding with other vehicles.

Police had signaled to the driver to stop but he sped off, with police in hot pursuit, along Makarios Avenue.

The man is known to police in connection with previous cases of tobacco smuggling from the north, Cyprus News Agency said. It said his car came to stop when it crashed into parked cars and was then cut off by the police patrol cars that were pursuing him.

Citing preliminary information, CNA said a quantity of tobacco was found in the vehicle and taken in as evidence.
