Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis on Thursday launched the programme Planting for the Climate, which offers saplings to interested businesses in effort to have more trees planted around the island.
During a visit to the forestry department nursery, Kadis said in last year’s programme a total of 60,000 saplings were given to 500 organised groups looking to plant trees in various spaces.
The Planting for the Climate programme was approved by the cabinet in a meeting last year, Kadis said, adding it is an initiative to make Cyprus green, and help combat climate change.
Kadis said the forestry department has also visited past participants in the programme to monitor the sapling growth.
He added the majority of saplings planted are doing well and were planted according to instructions from the department.
The programme for 2020 will run from October 6 to 23.
