Bicommunal pro-unification group Unite Cyprus Now, called on Turkish Cypriots on Tuesday to vote for a candidate who will work for the unification of the island.
The group said in a written statement that though they are not in the habit of endorsing any specific candidate during election procedures since their supporters come from various communities, political inclinations and backgrounds, they “feel strongly about taking a position in favour of our vision for a united country for all Cypriots.”
Sunday’s elections for the new Turkish Cypriot leader are crucial, the group said, for all Cypriots who hope for a safe, peaceful, united future for themselves and future generations.
“This is yet another example of how we are bound together and the choice of one community will have an impact on the other,” UCN said.
It added that both the UN resolutions and recent surveys have demonstrated not only that the only solution is a federal solution as stipulated by years of talks, agreements and the UN resolutions but also that it is the only solution that can find majority support in both communities.
The group said deviation from this course would mean investing in the status quo, a condition that is neither sustainable nor beneficial for either side.
The group called on Turkish Cypriots to vote and do their part for solution.
