Firefighters rescued a young man who became trapped in his apartment after a fire broke out on the balcony of another flat in the building.

According to the fire brigade, the blaze seems to have broken out at around 4.38pm Monday on the balcony of one of the first-floor apartments.

A resident in a nearby flat became trapped by the smoke and could not get out.

Firefighters used a folding ladder to reach his window and rescue him.

A mother with her two children were in the apartment suspected of being the source of the fire and managed to get out safely along with other residents of neighbouring apartments, the fire service said.

The fire was extinguished more than an hour later with the help of two fire engines.

One apartment suffered extensive damage, while two more were also affected. The communal spaces and all the apartments of the second floor also suffered smoke damage.

The exact cause of the fire is being investigated.
