Syllouris says abstaining from duties after Al Jazeera revelations

House president Demetris Syllouris said on Tuesday he will be abstaining from his duties from next Monday pending an investigation into an Al Jazeera video in which he appears ready to help a Chinese businessman with a criminal record — who it later emerged was fictitious – secure a Cypriot passport.

Syllouris did not say whether he would be resigning, but he apologised over the trouble caused adding that he had made his decisions and he would be announcing them after the investigation whatever the outcome.

“I apologise for allowing some people, even through publication of this staged and fragmented picture, to hurt me and by extension the institution of House president,” he said in a written statement.

Syllouris urged the authorities to expedite procedures, putting himself at their disposal.
