More arrests as two remanded over Dherynia demo

Two men, aged 25 and 27 were remanded for three days on Tuesday by the Famagusta district court in connection with police investigations into the Dherynia checkpoint breach.

Four more were arrested later in the day; two men from the Larnaca district aged 41 and 22 and two, 29 and 21, from the Famagusta district.

On Sunday night, about 250 nationalists charged through a police checkpoint at Dherynia, to protest the opening of part of Varosha nearby.

The police are investigating them on charges of malicious property damage and participation in a criminal organisation, among other illegalities.

The incident shocked many across the divide who are fearful of further escalations stemming from the delicate issue of Varosha.

Many are concerned that the recent incidents will dampen efforts to renew talks in an effort to resolve the Cyprus problem.
