A total of 152 coronavirus cases, the second highest daily tally recorded on the island were announced by the health ministry on Tuesday, bringing the total to 2,839.

They were the result of 4,410 tests. On Saturday, the ministry announced 202 case, while last Thursday Cyprus broke the 100 cases mark, with 104 positive results.

The ministry said 23 of the new cases were found from contact tracing, and 99 were found from individuals tested on private initiative.

It added that 70 per cent of the people found from testing done on private initiative had symptoms and many were contacts of previously confirmed cases. According to the ministry, this 70 per cent has been self-isolating since they developed their symptoms.

Two cases were found from passengers, and ten cases were found from tests conducted by state hospital laboratories.

Eighteen cases arose from individuals tested on their doctors’ orders, two were tested prior to surgery, and the other 16 were tested after developing symptoms.

Twenty people are being treated at Famagusta General, the reference hospital, one of whom is in the high-dependency unit. Two people are intubated at Nicosia General’s intensive care unit, and another two are being treated in a Covid-19 ward.
