Sisi and Mitsotakis in Cyprus Wednesday for latest trilateral (Updated)

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriacos Mitsotakis will be in Cyprus on Wednesday to take part in the latest trilateral summit.

The government announced that as “part of the deepening of regional cooperation with neighbouring countries, the 8th Tripartite Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Summit would be held in Nicosia on October 21”.

Topics to be discussed at the Summit include the Cyprus issue, Turkey’s illegal actions in Varosha and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In his statements to the press at the presidential palace on Tuesday, acting government spokesman Panayiotis Sentonas said the summit was of particular importance “because it takes place during a period when Turkey’s provocations and actions affect the participating countries, but also wider regional security.”

The cooperation and the formation of common positions of the three countries are significant to achieve peace and stability in the region, Sentonas added.

The meeting will also discuss the results and progress of the tripartite mechanism, cooperation in the field of energy, immigration, the fight against terrorism, as well as the situation as it develops in relation to the coronavirus pandemic, the palace said.

When the summit is over, a joint declaration will be adopted, through which the common positions of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt will be formulated in a series of issues, challenges and policies.

Earlier Tuesday, police warned there would be traffic disruptions.

According to police, increased measures will be taken during the visit in accordance with established security protocols. As part of the security measures, brief road closures are expected in the Larnaca and Nicosia district.

Police called on the public to follow the instructions and show understanding.
